Food pantry thanks union

To the editor:

The men and women of United Steelworkers Union Local 12460 heard the cry of hunger in Watkins Glen and responded in force. On Saturday, April 1, 2017, eight union members volunteered their time to serve at the monthly mobile food pantry held at Catholic Charities’ Schuyler Outreach. They distributed food to 95 households. That number included 56 children, 155 adults and 33 senior citizens for a total of 244 people.

In January, Schuyler Outreach Food Pantry had put out a request to local businesses and service organizations looking for volunteers for the mobile food pantry that brings thousands of pounds of food to Schuyler County for distribution on the first Saturday of every month. The Steelworkers not only stepped up to the challenge, but took it one step further by holding a food drive collecting 393 pounds of food and additional monetary donations.

Teams are still needed from July through December. Ideally, an organization brings 6-7 volunteers to help unload about 2,000 pounds of food at 8:30 am, unpack it on tables and then hand it out to people from 10 am to 11 am. Cleanup is over by noon. We encourage volunteers to wear their company logos or even bring a banner and promotional materials.

If you are interested in bringing your team, please contact me directly. You can also visit Catholic Charities’ website or social media channels for more information.
