Sister Agnes Catherine Battersby, SSJ, 93

Sister of St. Joseph Agnes Catherine Battersby died Jan. 23, 2017. She was 93 years old.

She entered the congregation in 1943 from her home parish of St. Patrick, Elmira. She received a bachelor's degree in history and English in 1946 from Nazareth College and a master's degree in modern history in 1953 from Catholic University.

Sister Battersby began her teaching career in 1946 at St. Agnes Grammar and High School. She also taught at Aquinas Institute and Nazareth Academy, Rochester, and DeSales High School, Geneva. She also was principal at St. Mary School, Canandaigua; St. Agnes High School, Rochester; and DeSales High School, Geneva.

After almost 30 years in education, Sister Battersby began a new career working as a pastoral assistant at St. Patrick Church, Corning. In 1983, she was elected to the congregation's central administration, where she served for the next eight years. She returned to pastoral work in 1991 and served 10 years at St. James, Waverly, and six years at St. Felix, Clifton Springs, until her retirement in 2007.

Sister Battersby is survived by her nieces, nephews and sisters in the congregation.

Her funeral liturgy was celebrated at the motherhouse chapel in Pittsford on Jan. 28, 2017, with burial at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
