Service honors those who have died alone

On Feb. 11, the Greater Rochester Community of Churches-Faith in Action Network held a memorial service at Rochester's St. Ambrose Church to remember local residents who have died alone. The service featured a 1,700-pound cast iron bell that was donated to the GRCC by Brother David Schlatter, OFM, in honor of the organization's initiative to bury area residents who have no family or resources. The bell is one of 18 that has been used in various memorial tributes and ceremonies as part of Father Schlatter's "Bells of Remembrance" project, which was created in 2001 following the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the U.S. (Courier video by John Haeger)
