A special day with special people

Special occasions are always a whirlwind. So much planning goes into making a fun event that the event planners don’t get a chance to enjoy it. The example that jumps to mind is my wedding reception.

Fast-forward 19 years to Sept. 14, 2014, when the Catholic Courier celebrated its 125th anniversary with a public Mass and fair at Perinton’s St. John of Rochester Church.

Everyone on the Courier staff pitched in to plan the big day, and I oversaw the kids’ crafts and games. As the event drew near, it started to feel similar to my wedding reception.

Thankfully, I have become wiser with age and decided to enjoy the moment this time.

So during Mass, I took in my surroundings and all the people who came to celebrate with us.

When Graphic Artist Linda Rivers and Staff Writer Jennifer Burke relieved me at the children’s tent, I enjoyed the rest of the fair with my son, John.

I got to see the fruits of Staff Writers Amy Kotlarz and Annette Jiménez’s hard work arranging for the music and dance performers. I also caught up with General Manager/Editor Karen Franz and Circulation Manager Donna Stubbings at the Courier booth and saw Graphics Manager Matt Saxon’s screen-printing talents in action.

I saw John befriend Staff Writer Mike Latona’s kids, and also witnessed Photo Editor Mike Crupi and New Media Coordinator Sam Oldenburg capturing the event in photos and video. My favorite sight was Sam crawling out of a bounce house lugging his video equipment!

At the end of the day, as we picked up and packed up, I looked around and saw my coworkers talking, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. And I felt very blessed to work with them.
