Actor to present one-man show in Penn Yan

Actor Frank Runyeon will present his one-man performance, "Sermon on the Mount," at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 at St. Michael Church, 312 Liberty St. in Penn Yan.

Runyeon is a former television and film star who worked with actress Meg Ryan on the soap opera "As the World Turns" for seven years in the 1980s. In recent years he’s made a name for himself through his interpretations and performances of Biblical texts. His five critically acclaimed Biblical one-man shows include "Afraid!," a modern-day interpretation of the Gospel of Mark, and "Signs," an interpretation of the Gospel of John. Runyeon also speaks about the mass media at public and private schools across the nation, incorporating humorous stories from his years in Hollywood.

In "Sermon on the Mount," Runyeon puts the famous sermon in a new setting. He portrays the apostle Matthew recounting the sermon to early Christians in Antioch shortly after the Roman army has burned Jerusalem to the ground. Those hearing Matthew’s account include a livestock merchant, a silk trader, a deacon who can’t stop talking and a seamstress who spends all her money on clothes. Runyeon moves around the church throughout his performance, retelling the sermon with humor and drama.

There is no admission fee for this performance, but a goodwill offering will be accepted.
