Adult stem-cell advances will be presented May 6

The Adult Stem Cell Initiative is hosting a talk by a Chicago researcher who has found success with stem-cell treatments for multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes.

Dr. Richard K. Burt, who teaches at Northwestern University Medical School, will speak at 7:30 p.m. May 6 at the Rochester Museum and Science Center’s Strasenburgh Planetarium, 657 East Ave. According to a press release from the Adult Stem Cell Initiative, local autoimmune-disease patients Burt has treated with ethically derived stem cells include Alan Sparrow of East Rochester. The 17-year-old student traveled to Chicago in 2009 for successful treatment of scleroderma and will be present at the May 6 dinner, according to the release.

Admission to the dinner is $10 at the door. For details, call Geraldine Oftedahl at 585-266-2266.
