Agencies seek help for flooding victims

Catholic Charities is making an appeal for monetary donations to help families in the Tioga County area who were affected by flooding in late June.

According to Kathy Dubel, justice-and-peace coordinator for Catholic Charities of the Southern Tier, residents need assistance because of damage to their homes. For instance, many cannot do their laundry because their machines were destroyed. In addition, she noted, some workers were not able to get to their jobs during the evacuation period and lost that income.

Donations may be sent to: Catholic Charities, 215 E. Church St., Elmira, NY 14901. Indicate “Tioga Flood Relief” on your envelope.

Relief support also is being sought by the Catholic Charities Tioga Outreach Center. Store gift cards for food and household needs, as well as monetary donations for repairs and cleaning, would be greatly appreciated.

Checks should be made out to Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga and mailed to Catholic Charities, 324 W. Buffalo St., Ithaca, NY 14850.

In addition, the American Red Cross is seeking donations to help support the shelters, meals and snacks, relief workers and cleanup and comfort kits provided by the agency to flooding victims in numerous parts of New York state. To make an online donation, visit www.redcross.org.
