Agency launches new program for those with HIV/AIDS

Catholic Charities Community Services recently launched a new program intended to increase the level of existing housing and supportive services available to people living with HIV and AIDS. The agency received two grants from the New York State Department of Health’s AIDS Institute, and those grants will provide financial support for the new HomeSOURCE program for five years.

The HomeSOURCE program is designed to support those living with HIV and AIDS as they take ownership of understanding their own personal health, retaining appropriate housing, and meeting career and educational goals. This program is necessary because stable housing is critical to the health and well-being of people living with HIV, according to Phyllis McElligott, director of supportive services for Catholic Charities Community Services.

"This is an incredible opportunity for us to offer some very important services that are greatly needed by our HIV/AIDS community. The services being offered include housing retention, long-term rental subsidies, emergency rent and utility assistance, short-term rental assistance and employment programs to help individuals become self-sustaining," McElligott said.

The agency expects the new program will serve 240 individuals each year, she added.
