To the editor:
Like many people here, I was saddened to hear of the school closings. My wife and I are fortunate that the school where our child goes was not affected. Thankfully, we do not face the apparent choice of sending a kid to a distant or public school.
However, there is a third option, homeschooling.
Homeschooling is a lot less burdensome than most people realize. Since the instruction is one-on-one, the pupil moves through the material, and thus the curriculum quickly. The state requirements are not onerous. Lesson scheduling can be flexible. The world can become a classroom. Negative peer-group pressure ceases to be a problem.
I imagine that if enough Catholic parents decided on this course the diocese could provide the networking, organization and facilities — a gym for physical education — that organizations such as L.E.A.H (Loving Education At Home) provide for Protestant children.
There could be a silver lining in the dark cloud of the school closings.
