An opportunity to grow

Sometimes in family life, it seems like we just move from one emergency to another. A problem with the house is followed by a problem with the car and that is followed by someone getting sick and then the hamster dies. All the while worries about money and in-laws and academic performance provide stressful background noise. We try to take care of everything while still achieving at work and attending sporting events and recitals and making dinner and …

Sometimes we need to remind ourselves to breathe. Sometimes we need to remind ourselves that we are all on the same side in what seems like a battle with the world. Sometimes we need to give ourselves permission to take a break and get off the treadmill.

Lent can be that kind of a break for us. It can allow us to give ourselves permission to just stop what we are doing. We can stop smoking or stop drinking or stop eating sweets. We can read the Psalms or go to Mass or take five minutes every morning to pray. We can turn off the television or stay home or take the family on an adventure or spend lunchtime at a soup kitchen.

Lent is an opportunity to grow. It is a chance to take one or two steps closer to being the people we want to be. On our journeys through life, Lent is an oasis. Each and every year, Lent gives us time to take a break, take a step back, take a time out from our frantic lives. It lets us breathe, think, pray, be. It is a chance to declutter our spiritual lives and open ourselves up to experiences of grace. Lent is a chance to make some space in our lives so that we can hear God speaking love to us more clearly.
