Anticipating Advent

Is anybody else excited about Advent starting this weekend?

I think I’m more excited this year than I have been in quite a while, mainly due to my daughter’s birth last January. My excitement began building a few weeks ago when I started working on an Advent-related article for our December issue. The story was about ways to help kids understand and experience the Advent season, so I got to talk to a bunch of people and find out what they’ve done with their own kids and their students. They talked about things like families gathering around the Advent wreath and shoes waiting to be filled with goodies on St. Nicholas’ feast day.

Their words reminded me of my own experiences growing up in a Catholic household and attending a Catholic school. In those days Advent brought with it a sense of longing and anticipation, and not just for the presents I hoped to see under the tree Christmas morning. The Advent rituals and traditions made the story of Jesus’ birth — and my faith — come alive to my childhood self, and it truly was a time of wonder and awe.

I’m pretty sure I’ve lost some of that as I’ve gotten older and been caught up in the season’s hustle and bustle. I hate to admit it, but there’s even been a year or two when I never even got around to unpacking the Advent wreath.

Not this year! Now that I’m a mom, it’s my job to teach my daughter about our Catholic faith and make it come alive for her the way it did for me, and I can’t wait. By passing my beliefs on to her I’m also rediscovering my own faith and seeing it through fresh eyes, the way she will. How could I be anything other than excited?
