To the editor:
I witnessed, during the relatively brief bishopric of Bishop John Francis O’Hern (1929-1933), the rebirth of the Rochester diocesan paper.
Over the years it has sought to record the role of Catholics, lay and clerical, in exercising their faith. Thus it has published Father Richard Mc Brien’s "Essays in Theology," which some diocesan papers have rejected.
May I congratulate you for your willingness to listen to different views. The Courier has been able to embrace both Father McBrien and the late Father Paul Cuddy.
Now I live in Florida, where my diocesan paper, fearful especially of the laity, will not publish any letters to the editor.
