April’s essay winner was Mary Cotter, a fifth-grader at Allendale Columbia School in Brighton. In response to Why should we not be doubtful like Thomas? Mary wrote, “It’s very hard to believe in something you can’t see. As a Catholic, though, you must believe in the miracles of Jesus and in the mystery of his resurrection despite there being no proof besides the Bible. If we were all doubters like Thomas or needed scientific proof from the time of Jesus, then there would be no Catholic Church. Without our faith, we wouldn’t know the love of Jesus which strengthens us when we are sad. We need to remain faithful Catholics so that Jesus’ suffering on the cross is remembered and the doors of heaven stay open.”
