Have questions about Catholicism or church teachings?
As part of an attempt to reach out to Catholics and those interested in the Catholic Church, the diocese will have people on hand to answer such questions during a “Catholic Call-In” from 2 to 8 p.m. April 22. The toll-free number to call is 1-888-4SPIRIT (888-477-4748). Advertising for the call-in has appeared in church bulletins and on the electronic marquee near Frontier Field in Rochester.
The call-in is part of the Spirit Alive! diocesan spiritual renewal and is open to the entire diocese. Maribeth Mancini, director of the diocesan Department of Evangelization and Catechesis, said the renewal aims to answer such questions as, “I’m not married, and I’m a mother. Can my baby be baptized in the Catholic Church?”; “Is it a mortal sin to miss Mass on Sundays?”; “What’s the Catholic Church’s position on stem cells?”; or “I am divorced. Can I go to Communion?”
“They may be questions on the church’s positions or questions that people have about their own relationship to the church,” Mancini said.
A team of pastoral ministers such as Catholic priests, deacons, women religious and pastoral associates will be answering the questions. The call-in also will be available for Spanish and Vietnamese speakers.
People may be referred to other offices or connected to a local parish for the answers to some questions, Mancini said. For example, those with questions about the recent diocesan school closings will be referred to the Catholic schools office, she said.
