Thanks to a furious fourth-quarter rally, Aquinas Institute earned the Section 5 Class A boys’ basketball championship March 2.
The Little Irish, seeded No. 3, scored a 64-55 win over top-seeded Charlotte in the title game after trailing 45-38 entering the final quarter. Navaar Poole led Aquinas with 24 points, while George Graham had 13 and Melvin Grayson added 10.
AQ had reached the final with three earlier sectional wins: 100-42 over No. 14 School of the Arts in first-round play Feb. 20 as Poole had 17 points; 76-62 over No. 6 Pittsford Mendon in the quarterfinals Feb. 23 as Graham and Patrick McLamore scored 15 each, and 62-54 over No. 2 Geneva in the semifinals Feb. 27 as Kyron Allen had 18 points and Graham had 13.
The Irish’s season ended in the state Class A quarterfinals March 9, when they led 16-13 after one quarter against McKinley of Section 6 but went down to a 79-52 defeat. Allen’s 14 points led Aquinas, which finished up with an 18-5 record.

* Elmira Notre Dame’s girls, seeded No. 2 in Section 4 Class C, won 42-6 over No. 10 Bainbridge-Guilford in quarterfinal play Feb. 22 as Olivia May had 21 points and 11 rebounds and ND did not allow a single basket. The Crusaders then lost 53-35 to No. 6 Harpursville in the semifinals Feb. 27 despite 18 points from May. ND’s final record was 15-4.
* Notre Dame’s boys, seeded No. 3 in Section 4 Class C, won 73-42 over No. 14 Delhi in a first-round matchup Feb. 20 as Darius Garvin led ND with 27 points. That was followed by a 47-45 quarterfinal win over No. 6 Lansing Feb. 23 behind Garvin’s 15 points. Notre Dame then suffered a 55-50 semifinal loss to No. 2 Watkins Glen Feb. 27. Garvin had 17 points as the Crusaders ended with a 16-4 record.
* Our Lady of Mercy’s girls, seeded third in Section 5 Class AA2, earned a 61-54 victory over No. 6 Spencerport in a quarterfinal game Feb. 21 as Julia Delgatti scored 21 points. The Monarchs were edged 52-51 by No. 2 Irondequoit in the semifinals Feb. 26. Angelina Spampinato and Danielle Cleary had 10 points each. Mercy finished at 13-7.
* McQuaid Jesuit’s boys, the No. 4 seed in Section 5 Class AA1, lost 52-51 to No. 5 Penfield in quarterfinal action Feb. 22 despite Charlie Zaepfel’s 17 points. The Knights finished with a 14-5 mark.
