Aquinas captures Section 5 Class A softball championship

Thanks to the able arm of senior Bri Allen, Aquinas Institute has captured the Section 5 Class A softball championship.

Allen fired a two-hit shutout in leading the Little Irish to a 3-0 triumph over Pittsford Sutherland in the sectional final, played June 7 at SUNY College at Brockport. The victory gave the Little Irish a 26-2 record and put them in the state quarterfinal round on Tuesday, June 10, against Williamsville East of Section 6. That game will take place at 5 p.m. at Niagara Falls High School.

Caileen Sennett singled and scored on an error as AQ, the No. 3 seed, got the only run it needed in the third inning against fourth-seeded Sutherland. The Irish tacked on two runs in the sixth, also as the result of an error.

Aquinas had reached the final with a 5-3 win over No. 2 Victor in Class A semifinal play on June 4 as Allen threw a six-hitter and the Little Irish scored four times in the fifth inning to turn a 2-1 deficit into a 5-2 advantage.
