Aquinas teacher honored for Holocaust education

Patrick E. Connelly, a theology teacher at Aquinas Institute, received the 2010 alumni award from St. Bernard’s School of Theology and Ministry in recognition of his dedication to Catholic-Jewish relations and his commitment to Holocaust education in Catholic schools. The award was presented at St. Bernard’s annual Feast Day Celebration and Opening Day Liturgy Aug. 20.

Connelly has received many awards for his commitment to Holocaust education, including a Louis Yavner Award and a Korczak teaching award. He also received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant for the summer 2010 workshop in Alabama studying the American civil rights movement. He also has received three other National Endowment of the Humanities grants, and an article of his is featured in the Spring 2010 issue of PRISM magazine, an interdisciplinary journal on Holocaust education.

He also contributed to the 2008 anthology The Call of Memory, Learning about the Holocaust through Narrative. He additionally participated in the first-ever Lay Catholic-Jewish Conference at the Vatican in 2007. Connelly’s commitment to the International Book Sharing Project has connected Catholic students in the Rochester area with Jewish students in Israel to build dialogue and friendships.

Connelly is a 1995 graduate of St. Bernard’s and is the chairman of the Brennan-Goldman Institute for Catholic-Jewish studies.
