Auburn CDA court celebrates 90 years

Auburn Court 253 of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas celebrated its 90th anniversary June 12 with a Mass and brunch at Auburn Golf and Country Club. About 45 people attended the Mass, which was celebrated by Father Louis Vasile, pastor of St. Alphonsus, said Marion Cool, the court’s secretary and past regent.

A number of CDA officers from other courts were present at the event, including Second National Regent Sally Rytlewski of Albion and Second Vice State Regent Elaine Klesic of Lackawanna. Several other officers traveled to Auburn from courts in Long Island, Binghamton, Endicott, Watkins Glen, Elmira, Wolcott, Clyde and New Russia.

“We were quite pleased because they traveled from across the state to come,” Cool said.

The Auburn court draws its members from the Catholic parishes in Auburn and the surrounding areas, which makes it somewhat unique, Cool said.

“We’re not connected with a particular parish, where a lot of the different courts are,” she said.

Cool, who has belonged to the court for six years, said its devotion to community service is one of its strengths.

“We do have some social events, but we also try to put our emphasis on helping people that need assistance,” she said.

The court recently began providing volunteers and financial support each month to the soup kitchen at Ss. Peter and John’s Episcopal Church in Auburn. Auburn Catholic Daughters also regularly visit residents at Mercy Health and Rehabilitation Center, sometimes bringing cake, cookies and tea for the residents, Cool said. Some events, such as the court’s gift-wrapping booth in the Fingerlakes Mall each Christmas, give the court visibility and help it attract new members, she said. The court is currently trying to revitalize itself by recruiting new members in order to perform even more charitable works.

“It’s a lot of sweat and tears to help it grow,” Cool said.
