Auto program seeks donations

Wheels for Work, an auto loan program of Catholic Charities of Livingston County, is seeking donations of reliable vehicles. The Wheels for Work program helps qualified applicants who need transportation to keep or accept employment get used vehicles, vehicle repair, registration and insurance assistance, and driver’s education.

Low-income applicants may qualify to receive a used vehicle with a no-interest auto loan that is repayable over 12 to 18 months. All vehicles available through the program are donated, and vehicles are serviced to improve reliability and safety before being provided to applicants.

All vehicle donations are welcomed, but those that help the program most are fuel-efficient vehicles less than 11 years old and with less than 150,000 miles that are able to pass a state inspection, and that are safe and reliable for less than $1,500.

Applicants must have steady employment for the past two years, and have worked for at least a year at one employer, or have a job offer with an established work history.

The program usually has about a two- to three-month waiting period per applicant, which is based directly on the frequency of donations. In addition to receiving an auto loan and vehicle from the program, participants attend a vehicle-maintenance workshop.
