Avon’s St. Agnes School recently noted the 15th anniversary of its poster contest on alcohol and drug awareness.

Students ages 8 to 11 took part this year. Winners were Giles Yaddaw, Colleen Talty, Mary Davis, Henry Davis, Sydney Arbelo, Elizabeth Caiazzo, Lydia Kashorek and Eden Latiuk. Earning honorable mentions were Andrew Schlueter, Tommy Conlon, Vivianne Boor, Joseph Hayes, Matua Larnard, Thomas Schlueter, Caroline Hayes and Catherine Staley.

During the contest’s history, more than 100 youths have earned savings bonds or gift certificates by creating posters exhibiting strong artistic merit, slogans and overall impact.

“The reasons for this contest are simple,” said Donald Drexler, coordinator of the initiative. “We need to promote awareness at a critical time period, when youths are in early development. Reaching out to youth, to make the right choices that impact their lifestyle early, is very important.”

He added that the contest also has enabled young people to convey important messages to their peers in their own language.
