Basilian Father Frederick Sohn, 78, a native of Rochester, died Aug. 24, 2006, in Toronto.
He was a graduate of Aquinas Institute and taught there as a seminarian. Following his ordination to the priesthood in 1955, he continued teaching at Aquinas. With his subsequent transfer to teach in Gary, Ind., he pursued studies at Indiana University at Bloomington where he earned a doctorate in education. His doctoral thesis was on “The History of Catholic Education in Rochester, New York.”
After serving a principalship in New Mexico, he joined the faculty of the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas, where he taught in the department of education until his retirement.
Father Sohn was predeceased by his parents, Frederick and Margaret Sohn, and his sister, Lorraine Hasenauer. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Edward Hasenauer of Rochester; nephew Mark Hasenauer of Norfolk, N.Y.; and his fellow Basilians.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the chapel of the Cardinal Flahiff Basilian Centre in Toronto on Aug. 28, 2006, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery, Thornhill, Ontario.
