Have you heard about tomorrow’s specialness?
Yes, it is 12-12-12, which is reason enough for a celebration featuring a dozen bagels or a round of 12 Days of Christmas. But tomorrow also is ROC the Day, a 24-hour online giving campaign put on by the United Way of Greater Rochester. Many Catholic organizations are participating in ROC the Day. Among them is the Catholic Courier/Catholic Charities Christmas Appeal, which provides small, emergency grants to people in financial crisis. We’d be honored if you’d join us in being #ROCstars for the Christmas Appeal.
There are some very cool reasons to do so. Each hour — from midnight to midnight — one donor will win a $500 bonus for the charity of his or her choice. The Rochester Area Community Foundation is also donating $1,000 every two hours to the organization that attracts the most unique donors during that two-hour time period. We’re hoping for a great turnout between 2 and 4 p.m. Also, one longtime Christmas Appeal donor is providing $10 for every new donor who gives to the Christmas Appeal this year, so if you haven’t supported the appeal in the past, please consider sending a few dollars our way tomorrow.
I have seen firsthand how organizations that receive Christmas Appeal funds immediately put them to very good use. Right now, I’m working on a story about the ministry Mary’s Place in Rochester, which used the several hundred dollars it received from the 2011-2012 appeal to buy food to distribute to the refugees it serves. While at Mary’s Place on Thursday, I met some courageous people from Nepal and Burma who are working very hard to learn English, find jobs and create homes in their new homeland. A few dollars can do so much good in their lives.
