Bike ministry needs donations

R Community Bikes will be collecting used bikes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 18, at Penfield Fitness and Racquet Club, 667 Panorama Trail West, Penfield.

The grassroots nonprofit organization grew out of a bike-repair ministry at St. Joseph’s House of Hospitality, a Catholic Worker home. Volunteers collect and repair used bicycles to be distributed for free to Rochester’s neediest children and adults. The ministry accepts both child and adult bikes, and receipts are available upon request. Volunteers also are needed to repair bikes.

In 2008, R Community Bikes gave out more than 650 bikes; this year, the ministry is poised to beat that amount. It has already given away more than 545 bikes, and there has been more demand for bikes than supply. For details, visit www.rcommunitybikes.net or e-mail rcombikes@yahoo.com.
