Bishop Clark undergoing knee-replacement surgery today

Bishop Matthew H. Clark is scheduled for surgery today at Rochester’s Highland Hospital to replace his right knee, according to a statement from the diocese.

The surgery will be performed by Dr. Allen D. Boyd Jr., who along with his team successfully replaced Bishop Clark’s left hip in May.

After a brief hospital stay and initial rehabilitative therapy, which is common in such procedures, the bishop will recuperate at home, the diocese stated. He then hopes to return to work as soon as his doctors allow, according to the diocese.

Those who wish to send the bishop get-well wishes may mail them to: Bishop Matthew H. Clark, Pastoral Center, 1150 Buffalo Road, Rochester, NY 14624.

Bishop Clark, 71, was ordained a bishop by Pope John Paul II in May 1979 in Rome. He was installed as the Diocese of Rochester’s eighth bishop in June 1979 and will celebrate the 30th anniversary of his episcopate next year.
