The Diocese of Rochester issued the following statement on April 29 in response to the April 27 attack at the Chabad of Poway synagogue in suburban San Diego, California. The attack, in which an armed gunman killed one worshipper and injured three others, took place one day after the Catholic Courier’s May 1 edition went to press.
The diocesan statement said: “Bishop (Salvatore R.) Matano expresses his deep sorrow over the shootings at the Chabad of Poway Synagogue in San Diego and asks all the faithful to pray for the victims and for the consolation of their families. We stand in solidarity with our Jewish brothers and sisters in this tragedy and decry this senseless violence.”
