Bishop Matano rededicates altar at Ithaca church

The feast of the Immaculate Conception carried special meaning for an Ithaca parish this past Dec. 8.

That’s when Bishop Salvatore R. Matano rededicated the altar of Immaculate Conception Church during a Mass on the parish’s feast day. Father Augustine Chumo, pastor, served as concelebrant.

According to a decree issued by the bishop’s office for the event, “During the Rite of the Dedication of the Altar, first class relics of Saint Lucy (Martyr), Saint Sixtus II (Pope and Martyr), Saint Innocent I (Pope), Saint Felix of Nola (Martyr), Saint Constantius of Perugia (Bishop and Martyr), and Saint Reparatus (Deacon and Martyr) were placed in an aperture in the (Immaculate Conception) altar.”

The rededicated altar is part of a wide-ranging renovation effort at Immaculate Conception, during which the church was shut down for 11 months before reopening in June 2023. Among the renovation’s other highlights are new pews; enhanced lighting, sound and handicap access; new air conditioning and flooring; refurbished stained-glass windows, ambo, priest’s chairs and confessional windows; and a rebuilt pipe organ. In addition, the project included painting and asbestos removal.
