Pledging the diocese’s prayers for relatives of Pope Francis who were injured and killed in a car accident, Bishop Salvatore R. Matano extended sympathy in an Aug. 21 letter. Bishop’s letter offers condolences to Pope Francis
The pope’s nephew, Emanuel, is in critical condition following an early morning car crash Aug. 19 in Argentina. His nephew’s wife, Valeria Carmona, and their two young children, Jose and Antonio, were killed in the crash. Holy Mass will be offered for them, Bishop Matano said.
"Most Holy Father, as you always are in our prayers, we now increase those prayers, realizing that the extraordinary demands of your Petrine office do not allow you to be with your family as you would wish," Bishop Matano wrote. "This sacrifice represents so many sacrifices the Lord asks of you as the successor to Saint Peter."
