Calming the storm within

At Mass this past weekend we heard the story of Jesus calming a storm. Jesus was on a boat with his apostles when a violent storm arose, and fearful for their lives, the apostles woke Jesus.

"He woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, ‘Quiet! Be still!’ The wind ceased and there was great calm. Then he asked them, ‘Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?’"

My thoughts have drifted back to this passage often over the past few days. The last few months have felt like a stormy period; not a bad time, but one with lots of upheaval and change. My family recently moved into our new home after spending six months renovating the house while living with generous family members. We’re not anywhere near settled yet.

My husband and I also are expecting our third child in a few weeks. We’re overjoyed and anxious to meet her, but at the same time, I wonder every day how I’m going to find the strength, patience and energy to care for three kids under the age of 4. Even now I have days where I don’t know how I’m going to finish all my work, get our boxes unpacked, be a good mom to my girls and fit in all the seemingly endless appointments that the final stage of pregnancy brings.

I can feel my blood pressure start to rise, but then Jesus’ words echo in my heart.

"Quiet! Be still! Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?"

I do have faith, but sometimes I let it be drowned out by the storm around and inside me. I don’t know how I’ll get through everything, but I do know that I will, because, like the apostles, I am not alone.
