Canandaigua school hosts Rochester Diocese’s spelling bee

The annual Sister Mary Smith Invitational Spelling Bee took place April 27 at St. Mary School in Canandaigua. Thirteen students from Rochester-area Catholic schools participated in the event. The participants were the winners of their schools’ spelling bees.

The winner of the 2023 Sister Mary Smith Invitational Spelling Bee was Abigail Ruffin from St. Louis School in Pittsford. The runner-up was Olivia Owens from St. Rita School in Webster.

The other participants and their respective schools were Jane Kingsley, St. Agnes School, Avon; Kory Dwyer, St. Ambrose Academy, Rochester; Isabella Andrade, St. Francis-St. Stephen School, Geneva; David Drury, St. Joseph School, Penfield; Salena Velez, St. Kateri School, Irondequoit; Jamison Gray, St. Lawrence School, Greece; Peter May, St. Mary School, Canandaigua; John Kravec, St. Mary Our Mother School, Horseheads; Nora Murphy, St. Michael School, Penn Yan; Ayden Qui, St. Pius Tenth School, Chili; and Giada Marshall, Seton Catholic School, Brighton.
