Car hits hall of Scottsville church

A car plowed through the wall of the church hall at St. Mary of the Assumption Parish in Scottsville the morning of Sept. 20, parish officials said.

After veering off the road, the car drove across church property and struck Hartmann Hall about 1:30 a.m., said Vicki Carpino, business manager for the Five Saints West Parish cluster, which comprises St. Mary; St. Columba/St. Patrick, Caledonia; and St. Vincent de Paul, Churchville. Irene Goodwin, pastoral administrator for the cluster, said the driver was transported to the hospital, but she did not know if he had any injuries.

Carpino said a temporary wall has been put up to patch the hole in the brick wall of Hartmann Hall, but the hall is unusable for the time being.

Goodwin said a large faith-formation gathering scheduled for Sept. 22 at the hall will be canceled. A Sept. 21 baptism class will be moved to an alternate location, she said.

"We are at a holding point right now, as we are waiting for a claims adjustor to look at the damage," Carpino said.

Goodwin said the church, which is located next to the hall, was unaffected, and the 8 a.m. and 11 a.m. Masses Sept. 22 at St. Mary will go on as scheduled.
