Cathedral organ to be dedicated

The public is invited to attend a dedication ceremony and concert for the new organ at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 296 Flower City Park, Rochester.

The event will take place Friday, Sept. 12, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Bishop Matthew H. Clark will serve as presider, with a reception to follow. Highlights will include the playing of several well-known selections of sacred music, with participation by members of the Eastman School of Music, which worked closely with cathedral officials on the organ project.

The organ stands 40 feet tall and weighs more than 25,000 pounds. It was crafted by nationally known organ builder Paul Fritts of Washington state.

The cathedrals’ organ will be part of the program for a major organ conference in Rochester Oct. 16-20 being sponsored by the Eastman Rochester organ Initiative. During the conference, internationally known organist Craig Cramer of the University of Notre Dame will play a concert on the cathedral’s organ.
