A year after his death, noted jazz composer Dave Brubeck’s popular choral work "La Fiesta de la Posada" (Festival of the Inn), will be performed locally by the Rochester Lyric Opera.
The concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 296 Flower City Park, Rochester, will kick off the Cathedral Community’s Creche Festival Weekend. Brubeck, a Catholic convert who died Dec. 5, 2012, based "La Fiesta de la Posada" on Mary and Joseph’s search for lodging before Jesus’ birth. A free-will offering will benefit the House of Mercy, a Rochester shelter, and the Santa Lucia School in El Salvador, which provides 575 children with education and housing.
In addition to the Rochester Lyric Opera concert, the festival weekend will include a Breakfast with St. Nicholas event, with sittings at 9:30 and 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. Tickets are $5 per family up to six people and are available at the cathedral’s main office or by calling 585-254-3221.
At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, there will be an Advent Candlelight Lessons and Carols featuring the Third Presbyterian Church Children’s Choir, Antioch Baptist Church Choir and the Cathedral Choir. A free-will offering will be taken.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, the Celtic and American folk musicians Dady Brothers and Friends will perform a concert. A free-will offering will be collected.
The Creche Festival Weekend kicks off an annual exhibit of notable Nativity scenes. On display in the cathedral narthex this year from Nov. 30 to Jan. 5 are more than 100 Nativity sets from the University of Dayton collection.
