Cathedral to host organ-concert series

Rochester’s Cathedral Community will kick off the Halloran-All Saints Organ 2008-09 Concert Series with an Oct. 11 concert in honor of the 100th anniversary of St. George Church.

Each of the 11 concerts in the series will be held at Sacred Heart Cathedral, located at 296 Flower City Park, and will showcase the Halloran-All Saints Organ, which was installed in the cathedral over the summer. The $1.5 million organ stands 40 feet tall, weighs more than 25,000 pounds and is made up of nearly 4,000 pipes. The organ was named after the late Father Emmett J. Halloran, who passed away in 2004, and was funded by Father Halloran and two anonymous donors.

The Oct. 11 concert, which will begin at 1 p.m., also will feature Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary’s Youth Choir from Lithuania. This concert is the first of six free concerts in the series. The other free concerts will take place:

* Nov. 9 at 2 p.m., featuring sung and instrumental music for the Rite of Marriage

* Nov. 14 at 7:30 p.m., featuring the Rochester chapter of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians

* Dec. 7 at 2 p.m., featuring organ and instrumental music for Advent lessons and carols

* Dec. 14 at 2 p.m., featuring the Dady Brothers and friends

Three concerts will feature the acceptance of free-will offerings:
