Catholic Charities in Tioga seeks donations for baby shower

Donations are being requested for a baby shower to be hosted by the Tioga Outreach Center, a ministry of Catholic Charities of Tompkins/Tioga. This second-annual shower will take place Saturday, April 25, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the center, located at 464 Broad St. in Waverly.

New and gently used baby items are sought for families with infants or those who are expecting. Requested items include diapers, baby wipes, clothing, baby furniture, car seats, lotions, shampoos, bibs and bottles. Donations may be dropped off at Catholic Charities between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Drop boxes also may be accessed at the Waverly Pharmacy, Curves in Sayre and Owego, the Moose Lodge in Owego, the Owego Pennysaver, the Greater Valley Church in Sayre and the Big M in Spencer.

All donors are welcome to attend the shower, which will include refreshments, fun and games. The outreach center also welcomes financial donations for the event. They may be sent to Catholic Charities, care of Baby Shower, 464 Broad St., Waverly, NY 14892. Further information is available by calling 607-565-7580.

The baby shower is among many means of support offered by Tioga Outreach Center. Ongoing efforts include a food pantry, clothing closet, financial assistance, food-stamp enrollment, prescription assistance and Wheels for Work. The center also provided extensive assistance to Tioga County-area residents who were affected by the Susquehanna River flooding in 2006. The ministry coordinated financial and emotional support, as well as critical assistance with home repair, during immediate flood-recovery efforts as well as for many months afterward..

Tioga Outreach Center was launched in the winter of 2003-04 as the only program of its kind in Tioga County, offering assistance to low-income working families throughout the county and in some parts of Pennsylvania who lack regular income for sufficient food, shelter, clothing and health care. It was originally located at the former St. James School on Clark Street before moving in April 2007 to its Broad Street location, in the old Lefty’s Restaurant building.

Donations of cash, clothing, food and volunteer time from local churches, business people and individuals are welcomed by Tioga Outreach Center at any time of the year.
