Catholic Charities launches back-to-school drive

In partnership with local businesses, Catholic Charities of Chemung/Schuyler is collecting through mid-August new or like-new sneakers and backpacks, as well as new school supplies, to benefit local children in need.

Drop-off locations are available at the following businesses:

Chemung County: Empower FCU, Elmira; Farmers Insurance, Elmira; Mr. Panosian’s Famous Shoes, Elmira; Purple Iris Boutique, Horseheads; Treu Office Supply and Furniture, Elmira; Chemung County Library District, all locations; Parmenter Tire, Auto and Truck Service, Horseheads; and Sweet Frog, Horseheads.

Schuyler County: Famous Brands, Watkins Glen; Hi-Lites, Watkins Glen; Parmenter Tire, Auto and Truck Service, Odessa and Montour Falls; Itsy Bitsy Children’s Shop, Watkins Glen; Quinlan’s Pharmacy, Montour Falls; Visions FCU, Watkins Glen; and libraries in Watkins Glen, Odessa and Hector.

Donations also are being accepted at the Samaritan Center, 380 S. Main St., Elmira (Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m.); and Schuyler Outreach, 112 Tenth St., Watkins Glen (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.; Fridays, noon to 4 p.m.).

Donated items will be distributed at the Samaritan Center on Aug. 27 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. (must be a Chemung County resident), and at Schuyler Outreach on Aug. 25 from 4 to 6 p.m. (must be a Schuyler County resident). Both giveaways also will offer free haircuts for children.
