The public is invited to attend two upcoming events being sponsored by Catholic Charities of Chemung/Schuyler.
On Friday, Sept. 29, an “emergency-services open house” will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It will include site tours of the Second Place East Homeless Shelter and Prevention Program, as well as the Samaritan Center Emergency Services Food Pantry. Both are located in Elmira.
“Our goal is to raise awareness and educate the community to the critical services we offer, and how the general public can play a key role toward the delivery of these services,” according to Steve Hughes, Catholic Charities’ director of development.
In addition, the “Empty Bowls” fundraising luncheon will take place Monday, Oct. 16, at the Elmira College Campus Center. Five hundred people are expected to attend this first-ever local event, which is being held in conjunction with World Hunger Day. Participants will learn about local anti-poverty efforts while providing financial support for the Samaritan Center.
Admission is $20 per person and includes a commemorative bowl to keep. Bowls are being designed by Elmira College students. To make reservations for the Empty Bowls event, or for further details, call Thea Parker at 607/734-4898 or Steve Hughes at 607/734-9784, ext. 145. Or, visit www.ccchemung.org.
