Catholic Charities to honor local priest

Father James Hewes will receive the first Catholic Charities of Wayne County Community Service Award during a May 5 dinner at the Savannah Dhu Educational and Wildlife Preserve in Savannah.

Father Hewes, pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish in Clyde and St. Patrick Parish in Savannah, was chosen because he was instrumental in the founding of Catholic Charities of Wayne County, said Loretta Kruger, executive director. The organization was formally created in June 2004.

Catholic Charities of Wayne County provides diversion and counseling services for youths referred by the Wayne County Probation Department; an early-intervention counseling program for young children; a parenting program for low-income single parents; a transitional-housing program for migrant farmworkers; counseling for individuals, couples and families; and a program that encourages at-risk youths to attend college.

The dinner will start at 5:30 p.m. and will include self-guided tours of the facility. Sponsor-level tickets are $50, patron-level tickets are $100. Tickets can be purchased through May 5.

The event also will feature a silent auction of items with a Wayne County or Finger Lakes theme, as well as drawings for a day-long fishing expedition for six, and a wild-boar hunt for two. Both expeditions will take place at Savannah Dhu and will include lunch on the preserve. Tickets for the drawings are $10 and must be purchased from Catholic Charities of Wayne County by May 3. Individuals do not need to be present to win.
