Catholic work camp to return to the area, seeks volunteers

A group of local volunteers organizing a summer work camp in Rochester are looking for local teens and youth groups who wish to take part in the SHINE Catholic Work Camp, which will spruce up locations in the Rochester area July 8-13.

The work camp will bring more than 100 youths from across the country to Rochester to help do maintenance or construction at homes and at nonprofit organizations.

The opportunity for local participants will cost $250. The week’s schedule includes daily Mass, adoration, praise and worship opportunities, service projects, fun and games, prayer groups, skits and a closing concert, and meals. Registration will end Apr. 30 or when spots are filled.

This year will mark the third year that SHINE Catholic Work Camp has come to the Rochester area.

"It’s unheard of that SHINE comes to a place three times," said Gerry Clark, one of the local organizers helping to plan the camp.

Monetary donations also are needed to provide sponsorships for local youths who wish to participate but cannot afford to do so. Donations also are needed to purchase materials for the construction projects, which in the past have included building wheelchair ramps to make homes wheelchair accessible, and doing painting at nonprofit organizations.

Additionally, volunteers are needed to assist in hosting the campers.
