The Catholic Courier celebrates the 2017 achievements and milestones of diocesan individuals and organizations in the Southern Tier:
Elsie Gorman, a member of Blessed Trinity/St. Patrick parishes in Tioga County, celebrated her 100th birthday on May 16.
Fourth- and fifth-grade students from St. Agnes School in Avon earned a regional Page Turners championship for the third straight year by winning a competition held April 24. Page Turners involves students reading numerous books and then competing against other area schools, answering questions from those books. In addition to its regional crown, St. Agnes won Eastern Division titles in both the fall and spring.
Carol Howard, a faculty member at Elmira Notre Dame High School, has been awarded a Project Kindle Fellowship by Earthwatch, an international environmental charity. As part of her fellowship, Howard will attend an Arizona expedition this summer where she will assist in following forest owls in western U.S. forests. She also will receive training for leading a student expedition for Earthwatch. In February 2018, Howard will lead Notre Dame students and chaperones on an expedition to the Xochimilco wetlands in Mexico.
