Chemung, Schuyler groups seek school supplies for kids in need

In partnership with local businesses, Catholic Charities of Chemung/Schuyler is collecting new school supplies and backpacks for local children in need.

Drop-off locations are available at numerous businesses in Chemung and Schuyler counties. Donations also are being accepted until Aug. 17 at the Catholic Charities offices (215 E. Church St., Elmira, or 105 9th St., Unit 20, Watkins Glen) Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4:30 p.m., and Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and the Economic Opportunity Program (650 Baldwin St., Elmira), Monday through Thursday, 8:15 a.m. to 5:45 p.m.

Donated items will be distributed Aug. 22 at Schuyler Outreach and Aug. 30 at Elmira Community Kitchen. Both giveaways are from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and require preregistration by Aug. 20 for backpacks and school-supply starter kits. Free dinner will be served at both locations.
