Longtime Penfield resident Shirley Bezek, who taught at Brighton’s Our Lady of Mercy High School and who founded and conducted the adult choir at Penfield’s St. Joseph Church for more than 30 years, will be honored by the Gregory Kunde Chorale and Orchestra with the creation of the Shirley Bezek Chair for Assistant Conductor.
The group will present an eclectic program of encores at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 6, at Irondequoit’s Christ the King Church. The program will include Vaughan Williams’ “Serenade to Music,” Handel’s “Ode on Saint Cecilia’s Day” and Mozart’s “Exsultate Jubilate.”
Bezek, a soprano, also has performed as a soloist with Opera Under the Stars and volunteered with Opera Theatre of Rochester. She has been singing with the chorale for the last eight years, and encouraged tenor Gregory Kunde in 1999 to work on such advanced techniques as blending and color outside of regularly scheduled choir rehearsals, which led to the formation of the chorale.
