Church sale proceeds benefit Elmira charities

Although Elmira’s St. Anthony Church closed this past June, some good news for local charities has emerged from this otherwise sad development.

According to an Oct. 19 Blessed Sacrament Parish bulletin notice, Father Walter Wainwright, pastor, noted that 10 percent of proceeds from the sale of the facility to Elmira College will be split up as follows: $20,000 to the St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation; $20,000 to Holy Family Catholic Schools; $20,000 to Notre Dame High School; and $20,000 to Catholic Charities of Chemung/Schuyler, of which $5,000 goes to the Elmira Community Kitchen.

"Each of the institutions benefits large numbers of families and individuals in our area. All of them do a tremendous amount of good for those they serve," Father Wainwright noted.
