College’s donation aids Elmira kitchen

An initiative by Elmira College students, for which they fasted and gave up snacks, recently netted $550 for Elmira Community Kitchen.

The check presentation was made during the March 23 lunchtime meal at the kitchen. On hand were Megan Conners, an Elmira College junior who has been involved with this effort for three years; and Robert Shephard, a faculty member and adviser to the student group that performed the project. The effort also is promoted among students by Jim Siconolfi, director of dining services at the college.

For more than 10 years college administration has allowed the students to pool funds remaining on their meal tickets at the end of each semester. In addition, students are involved in various aspects of volunteerism at the kitchen during the school year.

Elmira Community Kitchen, established in 1981, is located at 160 High St., Elmira, in the community center of Ss. Peter and Paul Church.
