Elizabeth Axelrod has been appointed as new coordinator of the Samaritan Center, a program of Catholic Charities of Chemung County. She began her position April 25.
Axelrod, 26, is a graduate of the University of Colorado, Boulder, with a bachelor’s degree in sociology. She also holds a post-baccalaureate of science certificate from Bryn Mawr College. She previously served as a research assistant, volunteer instructor and staff supervisor at the Boulder Shelter for the Homeless.
Axelrod replaces Cindy Smith, who had served as Samaritan Center’s director for more than eight years before leaving the position in March. Catholic Charities officials did not give an official reason for Smith’s departure, but said that her service will be recognized in the near future.
The Samaritan Center, located at 380 S. Main St., Elmira, is an emergency-services program offering food, clothing and prescription-drug assistance. Last year it responded to more than 18,000 cases for individuals and families.
