Couple recalled unique love story by revisiting where they met

Back to school time reminds me of when my husband, Ed, and I each packed up our belongings, said goodbye to our families and traveled to the upstate New York college where we met.

Our love took years to grow from friendship to romantic love. It was not the “love at first sight, can’t live without you” kind of love that Hallmark movies make you think is the way all true love should be. It was a very slow brew that became rich over a long time. It was our own unique love story.

Marriage was a forever commitment for both of us, so we took our time to be sure we could stand before God, family and friends and say, “For richer, for poorer, for better, for worse, in sickness and in health, until death do us part.”

After we graduated, we went back to our college to visit at least once a year. Going back reminded us of where our love story began. It helped us reset our marriage and helped us weather the normal ups and downs of life.

When our son was a toddler, we took him to our college. We told him the stories, showed him our special places and had him try little bites of our favorite college foods. When our second son was born, we took them both.

Ed showed them the sundial where we met after classes. I walked Jordan over the bridge where Ed and I used to stop to kiss. The boys said, “Kiss, kiss.” When we did, we all laughed.

After Ed passed away, it was hard for me to imagine going back without him. I think I’m ready to try. I pray I will feel Ed with me and the joyful memories will keep healing me.
