Courier receives evangelization award for social media series

The staff of the Catholic Courier received the Catholic Media Association’s Father John Catoir Social Media Evangelization Award for its 2023 Mass Matters social-media series.

The annual award recognizes the positive impact of a social-media campaign to make Jesus known and loved, and it is presented during the annual Catholic Media Conference, which took place in Atlanta, Ga., June 18-21. The award was established in 2017 by Father Catoir, a priest of the Diocese of Paterson, N.J., who was the president and founder of St. Jude Media Ministry, a former director of The Christophers and a past president of the Catholic Media Association.

Father Catoir also has a connection to Rochester. When Rochester’s Auxiliary Bishop Lawrence Casey left Rochester to become bishop of Paterson, N.J., Father Catoir was his priest secretary.

Father Catoir died in 2022 at the age of 90.

Last summer, the Catholic Courier asked local Catholics the question, “How does Mass matter to you?” Staff members invited people they met while visiting parishes to go on camera and share what attending in-person Masses and receiving the Eucharist meant to them.

Additionally, the Courier also accepted reader-submitted cellphone videos and written responses to the questions “Why do I go to Mass?” and “To me, the Eucharist is/means?” The videos and written submissions were posted on Instagram, Facebook and at CatholicCourier.com/massmatters periodically from June 7 to Sept. 30, 2023.

The Catholic Courier will receive a certificate and a cash award of $400 to underwrite the cost of technology in developing and/or continuing its evangelization efforts.

This is the first time the Catholic Courier has received this award. Also during the conference, the Courier won 21 other awards from the Catholic Media Association for work published in 2023.
