Dictionaries distributed at Holy Family School

Students at Rochester’s Holy Family School learned the meaning of the word generosity, when more than 100 dictionaries were given out Dec. 18.

Members of a newly formed Rotary Club which meets in the Lyell Avenue area donated student dictionaries to young people at the school. This Rotary Club is a provisional club that works on community-services projects, such as the dictionary distribution.

First-graders who received them chanted “dictionary” and hopped out of their seats to get the books, which were personalized with each student’s name in the front. They were then taught how to use a dictionary to look up definitions.

Students in fifth and sixth grades who received the dictionaries found that the books also had other reference information, such as details about countries.

“Enjoy them, keep them with you all the way through school,” Rotary Club President Gerard Ioannone told the students. “They are even usable all the way through college.”

Other Rotary members taking part in the distribution with school principal Mary Ellen Wagner were Tim McGrath of Rochester, the club’s president-elect, and Mary Wallace, the club’s secretary.
