Diocesan Advent events abound

The following parishes have informed the Catholic Courier of their upcoming Advent activities:

* St. Joseph Parish in Penfield is offering a Bible study, “Mary, Favored by God.” The remaining session of the three-session study will be held at noon on Dec. 13 and again at 7 p.m. on Dec. 14.

The parish also will host an organ recital at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 9, and an Our Lady of Guadalupe Mass at 7 p.m. Dec. 12.

* Church of the Assumption in Fairport will offer an Advent Evening Prayer at 7 p.m. Dec. 8 and 16.

* On Dec. 13 from 2 to 7 p.m., the Parish of the Holy Family in Gates will host an Advent Afternoon of Penance at the St. Jude the Apostle worship site.

* St. Mary of the Assumption in Scottsville will offer a Penance Service at 4 p.m. on Dec. 11.

* Compline, the Office of Night Prayer from the Liturgy of the Hours, will be sung each Sunday of Advent at 8 p.m. at St. Mary Parish in Auburn. This contemplative service is sung in candlelight by a Schola Cantorum under the direction of Aaron James.

* Sacred Heart Cathedral will offer Taize prayer from 3:30 to 4 p.m. Dec. 10 and 17.

The cathedral’s annual display of creches from around the world will run through Jan. 8. The display is available for viewing Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with special hours on Dec. 7, 14 and 21 of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Sundays from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.
