Diocese to provide full scholarships to 100 Catholic-school students

The Diocese of Rochester’s Building a Brighter Future Scholarship will provide full-tuition scholarships to 100 children who enroll in diocesan Catholic schools for the 2020-21 school year.

Applications currently are being accepted for these grant-funded scholarships, which are open to both new students as well as current Catholic-school students.

Applicants must meet household-income eligibility guidelines determined by the National Standards for Free and Reduced-Price Lunch. A student who receives the scholarship will be given a tuition voucher to a diocesan school in his or her geographic location, according to James Tauzel, interim superintendent of diocesan Catholic schools.

“We’re able to give the school a check to provide for that child’s education, so the school is able to function but the child is getting to go at no tuition cost,” Tauzel said. “That’s understanding the health aspect of it, knowing that an education is the key deciding factor to ultimately adulthood success in lifting communities out of poverty.”
