Diocese’s annual appeal raises $4.91 million

The 2008-09 Catholic Ministries Appeal fell short of its $5.39 million goal, but organizers say they’re still pleased with the nearly $5 million the campaign brought in during the current economic recession.

Parishioners pledged $5 million to the annual appeal, but only $4.91 million had been collected by the campaign’s official close on May 31, said Dave Kelly, CMA coordinator and associate director of the diocesan Office of Stewardship and Communications. This total is $480,000 short of the goal and approximately $185,000 less than the total collected last year.

This lower total wasn’t completely unexpected, given the tough economic conditions, Kelly said. Nonetheless, appeal organizers are thankful to parishioners who sacrificed and contributed to the CMA, which funds about half of the Diocese of Rochester’s annual operating budget and supports a wide range of diocesan ministries, programs and support services offered to parishes and faith communities in the diocese’s 12-county area.

“Certainly it’s a difficult economic environment, so we had thought there might be a slight downturn, but we were really pleased with how we did considering all the things that are going on in the economy,” Kelly said.
